A necklace is an article of clothing or jewelry; which is worn around the neck. Necklaces are frequently formed from a metal chain; often attached to a locket or pendant. Necklaces can also be manufactured with cloth, and they sometimes contain rocks (particularly gems), wood, and/or shells.
A necklace worn high on the neck is a choker.
Many Christians wear a cross or crucifix on a necklace.
Few pieces of jewelry are likely to make a statement or transform a woman's image the way a necklace will. A necklace is a piece of jewelry that is worn around the neck, but the varieties of necklaces are nearly endless. Most necklaces are made of metal chain and many are embellished with stones or beads, but there are countless variations. Necklaces can be made from cloth, wood, shells, or almost any material.
The necklaces that we look for tend to be classically designed, though we do have an eye for the unusual as well. A finely made necklace is a joy to handle, behold, and wear. Particularly striking features one may find on a necklace include pendants (decorative elements that suspend from the chain) or locket (pendants that actually open up and can hold a picture or other small object). Necklaces can bear pendants with religious significance, such as crosses, crucifixes, or Stars of David, but often the pendant or locket is simply a thing of beauty to be enjoyed and to reflect the wearer's beauty at the same time.
Necklaces are designed in varying lengths which can be worn to very different effects. Some materials are known for being featured in certain designs. For example, pearls are often featured in choker necklaces and one often hears the phrase "pearl choker" because these two things are so closely associated with each other. A choker is a necklace worn high on the neck, and, as the name implies, it fits rather closely. It's a lovely design that brings extra attention to a woman's beautiful face and neck. Chokers can also be made of ribbon, plain or embellished with stones or other decorative metal elements; the choker is a necklace style that goes back centuries. Paintings of royalty often show queens and princesses wearing chokers, often made with pearls and featuring a larger, more impressive stone dangling at the front as a focal point. It's an attention-getting style.
Pearl necklaces are often described with special terminology indicating different lengths. The terms 'princess,' 'matinee,' 'opera,' and 'rope' all signify certain ranges of length to connoisseurs of fine jewelry. (A "princess" necklace is a bit longer than a choker, about 18 inches long, and then the matinee and opera lengths are progressively longer; the longest an opera strand can measure is 36 inches. Longer than 36 inches, the necklace is described as a rope.)
